Shirley – She’s old, beautiful, and raised a boy named Bob

// August 5th, 2010 // No Comments » // Johnnie Walker's Iconic Courses, Quirky

It seemed only fitting in the month following Sir Bob Charles’ retirement from professional golf, to put Christchurch Golf Club – a club Sir Bob’s had a lifetime association with – under the spotlight to join the list of Johnnie Walker’s Iconic Courses.

Affectionately known as ‘Shirley’ after the large inner city suburb where it lies, the club was founded in 1873 – the second oldest in New Zealand behind Balmaceun, and the fifth oldest outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. This, combined with a host of prestigious tourneys under it’s generously sized belt, leaves no doubt that Christchurch Golf Club holds it’s place as an absolute icon of New Zealand golf.

If you’re like me, and you’re cricket and golf mad, this is the type of ad you’d love to see on the telly on a regular basis. Sky Sports UK put this together as a You Tube viral and I guess they’ve succeeded by entertaining me to pass it on. Don’t get too excited about seeing the Black Caps pop up their upcoming schedule – it’s a couple of years old.

If you liked this, you’re sure to lose your pant over a post Master Mouse Patrol‘s Sonny Bill Williamson and Macaveli crafter last November [click here yo].

Kim Jong-il: Best golfer in the world

// June 26th, 2010 // No Comments » // News, Quirky

N. Korean media also reported that Jong-il bowled a perfect game of 300 on his first try.

South Korea’s Pyeonghwa (Peace) Motors Corporation plans to stage an inter-Korean golf game next month in the North’s capital city of Pyongyang, company officials say.

“We have agreed with North Korean authorities to hold a friendly golf competition between the two Koreas from July 30 to Aug. 5 at a golf course in Pyongyang,” said an official at Pyeonghwa Motors, which has started a business venture in North Korea.

Fortunately for all entrants, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il will not be playing. If the official government media is to be believed, Kim is easily the greatest golfer the world has ever seeen.

Pyongyang media say Kim enjoys golf, having shot multiple holes-in-one during his first try at the game. He reportedly aced five holes and finished 38 under par on the golf course. The “Dear Leader” routinely shoots three or four holes-in-one per round, the government-controlled media reported. (more…)

Rolling with an entourage

// June 21st, 2010 // No Comments » // News, Quirky

Hours after his glorious maiden major championship victory at the US Open,  Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell’s already rolling five deep with an entourage. His next stop, the Late Show with David Letterman, possibly stopping at the Playboy Mansion for a game of bath robe ping pong with Heff. Hey, he’s the US Open champion – That’s how he rolls bro!

Thanks to Sonny Bill Williamson from Master Mouse Patrol for giving us the heads up on this doozie –  ”Even though I hate to publicly admit I use twitter, it allowed me see this nice photo Jeremy Piven shared today. I thought it was cool that he described this as ‘a photo with a true champion’.”

Robert Garrigus does a Jean Van de Velde

// June 15th, 2010 // No Comments » // Opinion, Quirky

With all due respect to the St Jude Classic, it’s not a high profile glitter event on the PGA Tour and the depth of the field reflected this, but I sure got my kicks out of the final holes of this one big time. Standing on the 72nd tee – in only his seventh event on the PGA Tour due to an indifferent career – American Robert Garrigus needed only a double bogey six to take claim the biggest victory of his life… Sound familiar?

Yes, Garrigous got a touch of the Jean Van de Veldes, and quite frankly, it was hilarious. It began with a huge high rope hook into the lake, followed by some other crappy decisions and hacks, and eventually he got the ruddy ball in the hole for a triple bogey seven. (more…)

Todays chores: Sweep the porch - tick

The passion runs deep during final rounds for the mrbojumbles family. An email thread during the final holes of this morning’s Players Championship…

Willis: Man, I don’t really have a problem with Tim Clarke, but I find it impossible to enjoy a victory that involves a broomstick putter.

It’s just offensive. Lee and Stu are both in the fairway at 16 so it’s not all over yet, but the little Yarpie is looking rock solid with a two shot lead at 18. (more…)
