Sir Bob Charles – We salute you

// August 3rd, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Johnnie Walker Golf Club News, Profile

Following last month’s Senior British Open, the curtain came down on a legendary New Zealand sportsman’s career. 74-year old Sir Bob Charles – our greatest ever golfer – putted out with a double bogey to miss the cut with rounds of 80 and 78 at Scotland’s notoriously brutal Carnoustie track. There was no fuss, just a few spectators following the various golfing icons around that afternoon. But for us Kiwis, that moment turned out to be hugely significant. (more…)

Pure Golf 2010 – Those lucky bastards

Golf, every day, for a whole year – Jealous? Yeah you are, I certainly am. This very goal is what two Kiwis – Jamie Patton and Michael Goldstein – are on the mission to achieve. Before they could turn their goal into a reality they had to give their jobs as lawyers the bird, then they were all set to set to tick off 365 golf courses in New Zealand and abroad. I crossed paths with them way back in January while I was down in Queenstown for the New Zealand Open, and even back then I thought the goal was a bit far fetched. 167 days on, the boys are on the east coast of the United States, they’re in remarkably good spirits, full of good stories, sick of two-minute-noodles, semi famous, broke, and are still friends. Follow the link below to listen to a little yarn we had today while they were at Pinehurst – enjoy. (more…)

From the outside looking in, you could be forgiven for assuming the life of a pro golfer is one of luxury, jet-setting from one exotic to the next, endless cocktails and mammoth paychecks. The reality is, this is far from the truth. For hundreds of talented pros living out of a suitcase on the move every week, just trying to make the cut to put food on the table is equal to the pressure the big boys face in the majors. (more…)

The greatest shot of all time backed up with the greatest missed high-five of all time

The greatest shot of all time backed up with the greatest missed high-five of all time.

He has a front row seat every time the greatest player to ever play the game strikes a golf ball, but outside his extremely high profile job caddying for Tiger Woods, Steve Williams is still a Weetbix-kid at heart.

Steve took the time to chew the phat with mrbojumbles on Saturday and share his thoughts on the 09 season, his Summer schedule, Danny Lee, the debate of caddying classed as a sport, life beyond carrying the bag and the possibility of seeing Tiger compete on our shores again.

Big cheers to Steve – lets hope we can make this a regular thing… Enjoy!

Ben inside the ropes at the holy grail of golf - Augusta National

Ben inside the ropes at the holy grail of golf - Augusta National

Its about time you were introduced to mrbojumbles favourite New Zealand amateur, Ben Wallace.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to follow Ben’s rise through the ranks at close hand by peeking through fence, literally. Ben lives over the back fence from my old man in Auckland, so between babysitting a much younger Ben and making mischief with the rest of the Wallace clan, I’ve seen him somehow become rather handy and this game called golf, quite handy indeed.

Gone are the days where amateurs hammer back a hamburger and coke at the turn, the right handed plus-two handicapper is part of the new school of kiwi amateurs pushing tin in the gym almost as much at the 25 hours he spends grooving his swing on the course each week. This diet of sushi combined with a generous helping of spin classes and tournament play has launched this 20 year old to the door step of the pro realms. (more…)
