In a week dominated by talk about the world number one ranking, US Open champion Graeme McDowell put some icing on his season with a victory in the European Tour’s Andalucia Masters. Expect some sprinkles from the Northern Irishman as the Race to Dubai draws to a close – the man’s in stellar form in twenty-ten (audio below). Meanwhile, the PGA Tour was in Asia last week for the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic where American Ben Crane showed that his work-out routine’s starting to bear fruit. Crane drained an eight-foot putt at the last to claim a one-shot victory over Brian Davis, his third title on tour.

Despite the fact that most of the big boys of the golfing world were chilaxing on their super-yachts last week, there was still two of the most memorable tournament finishes in recent memory on both sides of the pond.

At Sergio Garcia’s home course – The Club de Campo del Mediterráneo – Italian teenager Matteo Manassero created European Tour history by becoming the youngest winner, aged 17 and 188 days. This beats the previous record our very own Danny Lee, while still an amateur, at the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic, aged 18 and 213 days. As a result of his stunning four stroke victory, the Italian prodigy becomes the youngest full European Tour Member – beating the previous record held by Seve Ballesteros, who was 17 and 200 days in 1974. There’s no doubting this kid’s talent – we all saw him perform with distinction at last year’s Open Championship while paired with the great Tom Watson flirting with the lead nearing 60, and at this year’s Masters he showcased his enormous ticker. Matteo now moves into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking – a number that’s sure to drop even lower before he even turns 18! Above all, I have the utmost respect for this young chap because of his Kinder sponsorship – who doesn’t like Kinder Surprises, Bueno Bars, Fererro Rocher, Nutella (no shit) and Tic Tacs! (more…)
