Ben inside the ropes at the holy grail of golf - Augusta National
Its about time you were introduced to mrbojumbles favourite New Zealand amateur, Ben Wallace.
I’ve been fortunate to be able to follow Ben’s rise through the ranks at close hand by peeking through fence, literally. Ben lives over the back fence from my old man in Auckland, so between babysitting a much younger Ben and making mischief with the rest of the Wallace clan, I’ve seen him somehow become rather handy and this game called golf, quite handy indeed.
Gone are the days where amateurs hammer back a hamburger and coke at the turn, the right handed plus-two handicapper is part of the new school of kiwi amateurs pushing tin in the gym almost as much at the 25 hours he spends grooving his swing on the course each week. This diet of sushi combined with a generous helping of spin classes and tournament play has launched this 20 year old to the door step of the pro realms.
His goals to play on the PGA Tour and become a top 10 player in the world are the dreams us Weetbix kids are made of. After hearing he once holed a five iron on consecutive days on Auckland Golf Club’s fourth hole for albatross, it seems these aspirations may not be just a mirage on the horizon. Tinny or pure, I guess it’s a good enough reason to forgive him for liking Home and Away and Deal or No Deal.
I caught up with Ben over a beer to discuss his progress, his latest golfing adventures, etiquette and Danny Lee. Look out for Ben at the top of a leader board near you.
