European Tour Shot of the Year

Padraig Harrington is dusting off some more space in his rammed trophy cabinet. The Irishman’s killer season just got the cherries on top after being awarded the recipient for The European Tour’s Shot of the Year for 2008.
Paddy’s approach to the 17th hole in the final round of The 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale can not be put down to the luck of the Irish. After splitting the fairway off the tee with his trusty 5 wood he was left with an approach of 249 yards to the par 5. With his closest threat Greg Norman 2 shots back, the Dubliner wanted to make birdie and step on the Australians throat. Both he and his caddie were happy with the decision to pull his favourite club out again to take on the wind and the narrow green. With the down slope assisting keeping the ball low and his 5 wood still warm from the tee, Paddy ripped the shot of the year to 3 feet. A true testament to his hard practice and the trust he has in his swing, this is perhaps Harrington’s greatest strength, the precise accuracy of his yardage control in intense conditions whilst executing the shot under the pressure in the final holes of a Major Championship.
Of course Padraig went on to bin the 3 footer for an eagle, bury the rest of the field, collect his 2nd Major and to cap it off claim The European Tour Shot of the Year too.
