Robert Garrigus does a Jean Van de Velde

// June 15th, 2010 // No Comments » // Opinion, Quirky

With all due respect to the St Jude Classic, it’s not a high profile glitter event on the PGA Tour and the depth of the field reflected this, but I sure got my kicks out of the final holes of this one big time. Standing on the 72nd tee – in only his seventh event on the PGA Tour due to an indifferent career – American Robert Garrigus needed only a double bogey six to take claim the biggest victory of his life… Sound familiar?

Yes, Garrigous got a touch of the Jean Van de Veldes, and quite frankly, it was hilarious. It began with a huge high rope hook into the lake, followed by some other crappy decisions and hacks, and eventually he got the ruddy ball in the hole for a triple bogey seven. (more…)

Sign of the Times

Last month Time Magazine published a nice little reference to the Tiger Woods saga. Although brief, it summed up the full article by Hampton Stevens in the Atlantic quite superbly.

“Whether Tiger’s comeback is a sports story, then, really depends on who is doing the asking—or the watching. For the casual observer, Woods is interesting mostly for what he represents off the golf course. How he performs on it from this point forward, win or lose, can only be epilogue. For the fan, how he performs matters most, not because birdies bring redemption, but because the simple beauty of the game trumps all social discourse. The question, really, is whether you only care about Tiger Woods because he plays golf or you only care about golf because Tiger plays it.”

Cutting my lunch

What are you laughing at? Your just jealous your lunch box ain't as cool as mine.

What are you laughing at? Your just jealous your lunch box ain't as cool as mine.

Ahead of last week’s Northern Trust Open in California, I was feeling rather confident about Steve Stricker’s form, so I threw out a challenge on Twitter predicting that he would win. I was so confident I was willing to put my lunchbox on the line if anyone was willing to do the same backing another horse.

Just to put this in context, my lunchbox usually consists of a wholesome sanga, a yoghurt or two, a muesli bar, some fresh fruit and perhaps some crackers or chocolate – So as you can see, I was really putting my crown jewels on the chopping block. I think my confidence surely scared off any potential challengers because no one stepped up to the plate. When Steve Stricker’s par putt on the 72nd fell for the two shot victory on Monday, no one was happier eating their lunch than me. (more…)

Jeev at the top of his mark pondering the best way to find some purchase of the deck

Jeev at the top of his mark pondering his next delivery

After the raging success of the mrbojumbles world XV, by popular demand we bring you the leather on willow version. Thanks to Eddie Mackie and Master Mouse Patrol the selectors of this team for all their hard work. I know many an hour of articulate debating for players jostling for spots in the line up was made before this rip-snorter of a side was decided upon.

1. Geoff Ogilvy (AUS)
He’s a Strayan, technically sound, can take the new ball heat……and he’s a Victorian!!!

2. Phil Mickleson (USA)
Not only does he create a left/right opening combination, but his mastery of trick shots will match up well against spinners on the sub-continent. And he’s slightly fat, allowing him to fill the Mark Taylor role at the top. (more…)

Nothing like a turtle neck skivvy to build a fan base

Nothing like a turtle neck skivvy to build a fan base

Congrats to Mike Richardson of Royal Oak, Auckland for winning the first edition of the Johnnie Walker ‘Soap Box’ competition. Given the brief: “In under 500 words, lets hear your thoughts on 2009′s four major golf championships”, Mike’s spun a good yarn on his view of 2009′s big four. Enjoy the read people and enjoy your whiskey Mike.

There’s nothing quite like watching exciting Major championships. For me this year seemed more about who didn’t win as opposed to who won. I wouldn’t want to take anything away from the winners but imagine what it would have been like if things had turned out a little different out there. (more…)

Nothing beats tossing tangy fruits and snifters in the cinema

The drama of the action in-and-around the golf course has enraptured fans of the game through the generations and around the world. But the same drama that pulls in the crowds has also provided rich material for filmmakers too.

Claret jug

Its taken a few days for the mrbojumbles crew to gather our thoughts on last weeks Open Championship, for this we are sorry. But not as sorry as we felt for Master Watson after another sleep deprived major viewing weekend went right down to the wire. Here’s how lads saw the drama at Turberry, Scotland unfold: (more…)
