Robert Garrigus does a Jean Van de Velde

With all due respect to the St Jude Classic, it’s not a high profile glitter event on the PGA Tour and the depth of the field reflected this, but I sure got my kicks out of the final holes of this one big time. Standing on the 72nd tee – in only his seventh event on the PGA Tour due to an indifferent career – American Robert Garrigus needed only a double bogey six to take claim the biggest victory of his life… Sound familiar?

Yes, Garrigous got a touch of the Jean Van de Veldes, and quite frankly, it was hilarious. It began with a huge high rope hook into the lake, followed by some other crappy decisions and hacks, and eventually he got the ruddy ball in the hole for a triple bogey seven.

So off Mr. Garrigous went with Lee Westwood and Robert Karlson to playoff. This was about when I noticed it looked as though he had shat his pants (see photos taken of my TV). Was it the pressure of the St Jude Classic? Hey I’m not taking the piss here (no pun intended), but this was the core of the humor for me. It was hardly a major and Robert was looking every bit a choker Frenchman when it counted (with a suspicious large dark foul wet patch on the seat of his pants).

It was early on a Monday morning for me, but when his drive ended up dead behind a tree in playoff I was in stitches – more energy than I exerted during a wet weekend indoors. Perhaps the best part of the coverage was after his bogey bumped him out of the playoff – Garrigous tried to do a fancy 360 putter throw in the air and catch it again, only to miss-judge the throw and have the putter smack in square in face. The slow-mo replay of this was the cheery on my Monday morning cake. Oh yeah, Lee Westwood won and ended a 12-year drought in the process. He’s now one of the hot favourites for this weekend’s US Open. Don’t be surprised is Robert Garrigus falls of the face of the earth after that highly embarrassing debacle either.
