Stewart-CinkHas an Open Champion ever had less praise bestowed upon them for winning golfs greatest piece of silverware? Stewart Cink is surely the least talked about player in history post winning their first major. And rightly so. The 2009 Open Championship will forever be remembered as the Tom Watson Open as he reeled back the years to come within eight feet of history. But is was the big bald American who does cheesy tweets on Twitter who lifted the Claret Jug late on that Sunday, and probably lost any fans he did have in the process.

Having just turned the telly on to strap into the first round of the PGA Championship at Hazeltine, I was greeted by a sickening sight that made me feel the deepest sympathy for Tom. The broadcasters were naturally giving Cink some extra coverage, and while Tom is likely to still be picking up the pieces of his shattered dreams at Turnberry, if he’s also tuned in watching Stewart Cink five over after five including a shank, it’s sure to amplify the grieving process. He can only be thinking ‘how did I hand my Claret Jug to this hacker?’

Fairway Feherty provides the dulcet tones.
